Standard Definition vs. High Definition

In the fall of 2009, we debated whether to make the equipment upgrade to shoot in high definition. So we rented a Canon 5D Mark II to shoot the high definition, and used our old camera, the Panasonic DVX-100a to shoot the standard definition footage. The result? Well, you can judge for yourself, but we immediately made the investment to upgrade our studio to full HD after we shot this video.

A brief "How to" on how to choose the right music for your wedding video:

The music you choose for your wedding video will make all the difference in how your final video turns out. It's a hard fact to face, but it's important to understand. Choosing the right song for your video is probably the second most important decision about your video (the first being who you hire to shoot it.)

So how do you choose the right music? Here are a few suggestions:

1- Pick music that is timeless but relevant. Some songs are hot for a year, then burn out. Some songs are classics, but are so drab and stale they are better suited for elevators than wedding videos. Choose a song that will still be good in 5, 10, or 20 years, but remember to keep it relevant to what you like to listen to.

2- Choose a tempo that fits your vision of the video. Do you dream of a slow, romantic video, or a fun and exciting video? There is no right answer, but the music you choose will greatly influence the overall feel of your video. If you want romantic, choose something slower. If you like it more fun, pick something with a good tempo.

3- Keep your music at 3-4 minutes. While it's OK to go a little over or under this time limit, it's best to keep your songs at the 3-4 minute range to keep the timing of the video natural. A 2-minute song makes for a short video segment that feels too abrupt. Songs that are more than 4 to 4.5 minutes start to drag on, so bear that in mind as you choose your songs.

4- Plan. You will need 3-4 songs for your photo montage, 2 songs for your ceremony/ temple footage, and 2 songs for the reception. It's always great to include 1-2 extra songs when submitting your music just in case on of your original choices doesn't quite fit. So all together, you should have 7-9 songs on your music CD. If you have a particular song choice to go with a particular video segment, be sure to include a note about your preferences.

Finally, if you need help choosing music, don't be afraid to ask. We shoot a lot of videos, and edit with a lot of music, and get to know a lot of personalities as we're making videos. We can usually decide what music would work best for you after only a few minutes of discussion.

This video was our first traditional (non-Temple) video shoot. We shot at the Canterbury Place in Bountiful, UT. Our equipment, shooting ability and knowledge has come a long way since then, but it's sure fun to watch the old stuff!
